Tourism beats India's economic slowdown
Sept 6, 2019

Some good news for the tourism industry in India. At a time when other sectors face recession and joblessness a recent report by the World Economic Forum says tourism in India has picked up and country's ranking has claimed a staggering six slots taking India to 34th position.According to the Indian Express growth in the tourism sector  is aided —price competitiveness, or in other words, being a cheap destination that has rich natural and cultural resources.Whats most encouraging for India is that among the top 25% of all countries ranked in the WEF report, India witnessed the greatest improvement since 2017.The report says boost in tourism can be partially be attributed to the Centre’s policies. Last December, the Union government issued new rules governing India’s coastlines, which allow temporary tourism facilities like shacks, toilet blocks and drinking water facilities in what were earlier ‘no-development’ zones. Tourism contributes a substantial 10% to India’s GDP, generating about $250 billion.  Ladakh's chances of attracting foreign tourists have also brightened after becoming a Union Territory.
